Developing Leaders Program
Ultimate Impact is proud to partner with the Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) to hire youth as Junior Coaches to help support training sessions, provide mentorship to younger program participants, and learn critical career-building skills through project work. Ultimate Impact is thankful to have the energy, leadership, and enthusiasm of the Junior Coaches!
Kasey
Third-Year Junior Coach
My name is Kasey and I am 16 years old. I live in San Francisco and will be a Junior this year at Balboa High School. I attended Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School where I first learned about ultimate Frisbee. I played sports through my middle school years and I currently play softball and volleyball in high school. The reason I enjoy playing sports is because it teaches me new skills that I will take with me to my future job/career. Ultimate Impact has taught me a lot about the responsibilities I have as a Junior Coach and as a team player. One thing I like about ultimate Frisbee is the community and how it brings everyone together in a judgment-free place. This is my third year of being a Junior Coach for Ultimate Impact and I'm so glad I have the opportunity to help the community grow even more than the year before. My goal for this year is to get more kids engaged and enjoying the sport as much as I do.
Edwin
Third-Year Junior Coach
My name is Edwin and I am 16 years old. I live in San Francisco and will be a Junior at Abraham Lincoln High School in the fall. I learned how to play ultimate Frisbee during middle school through Ultimate Impact. Throughout the years, Ultimate Impact has helped me become a better leader and person. I’ve become braver when leading activities and became more responsible with school and time management. I enjoy playing ultimate Frisbee because the sport is a team sport and communication is key to having a successful experience playing. This year is now my third year as a Junior Coach for Ultimate Impact and it's amazing to see the kids have so much fun. My goal for this summer is to make sure every kid is engaged and having fun. My hobbies include playing baseball, ultimate Frisbee, and being with my friends. In the future, I hope to attend UC Davis and continue playing sports.
Dorthy
First-Year Junior Coach
My name is Dorthy and I live in San Francisco. I attended Daniel Webster Elementary school, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School, and in the fall I’ll be a freshman at Phillip & Sala Burton High School. I started playing ultimate with Ultimate Impact when I was in 7th grade. This summer is my first year being a full-time player and part of the Developing Leaders Program. I’m a proud member of the Samoan community and I participate as a youth student with the Samoan Community Development Center’s PIYA (Pacific Islanders Youth Alliance) program. I’ve worked with kids before and I have really good patience. I’m super understanding and cooperative, I want the kids to have fun, and I strive to be a big help when needed. I want to be a role model for youth and somebody they can learn from.
Marquest
second-Year Junior Coach
My name is Marquest and I’m 16 years old. I go to City Arts And Tech High school and this is my second summer working for Ultimate Impact. I started playing ultimate during Ultimate Impact’s summer program and started playing full-time a year ago. I show up for the Dragons practice every week on Wednesdays. Being a member of Ultimate Impact is an awesome experience because I get to do things I’ve never done before such as go to tournaments and play against other high schools. This summer I get to expand on my experience of playing and become a Junior Coach. It’s real fun being a Junior Coach because I get to practice my leadership skills and teach younger kids the basic skills of ultimate and how to be on a team. One thing I’m looking forward to this summer working with Ultimate Impact is hoping to go outside and play Frisbee because this quarantine is gonna make me cry.
Nikko
Second-Year Junior Coach
My name is Nikko, I am 17 years old, and I go to George Washington High School. I currently play football and baseball for my school. I started with Ultimate Impact during the 2019 summer through a program called the Mayor's Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) and this is my second year. I’ve helped at multiple Boys and Girls Clubs in San Francisco (Vis Valley, Mission, Excelsior), I bring a lot of positive energy, and I am always helpful when needed. Ultimate Impact has helped me become more of a mentor/leader and more independent. Through my work in the Developing Leaders program, I’ve helped coach kids and have even led a group myself. I want to develop more leadership and social skills because I am a little shy.
Esther
First-Year Junior Coach
My name is Esther, I'm 14 years old, and I have lived in the Mission District my whole life. I went to Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 and I will be going to the 9th grade at Ruth Asawa SOTA in the fall of 2020. I am really interested in social activism and writing because I think it's really important to express your opinion and teach people. This is my first summer working with Ultimate Impact, but I have been playing ultimate since 2018. I started playing ultimate to keep up with my other sports that I play (soccer, track) but now I play with Ultimate Impact and another team. I think ultimate Frisbee is a great sport that is super fun and very engaging. I also think that ultimate is fun because you get to play with your friends. I have loved being a Junior Coach because I get to teach and mentor kids while also being able to have fun too.
Hao
Second-Year Junior Coach
My name is Hao and I am 15 years old. I attend Lowell High School and will be a sophomore in the fall of 2020. I went to Visitacion Valley Middle School where I learned how to play ultimate Frisbee with Ultimate Impact more than 2 years ago. As a Developing Leader I hope to learn new skills such as: self awareness, communication, influence and agility.
Darren
Second-Year Junior Coach
My name is Darren and I will be a Junior at Balboa High School. I got introduced to Ultimate Impact through the Mayor's Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) and this is my second summer working as a Developing Leader. As a second year coach, I look forward to having more professional and career development opportunities as well as having new experiences. I like working with kids because they are always excited to play and they are competitive.
Sammy
fisrt-Year Junior Coach
My name is Sammy and I will be a freshman at KIPP High School in the fall of 2020. I started playing ultimate when Rocky came to my school and taught all of us back when I was in elementary school. With Ultimate Impact, I’ve traveled to many tournaments and played on the Dragons team with my younger brother. Last year, we even traveled to Seattle to play in a tournament. It’s important to me to be a good mentor to my younger siblings, and I look forward to using those skills as a Junior Coach in the Developing Leaders Program. This is my first job, and through the program I look forward to getting to know the other coaches, youth, and mentors.
Eric
fisrt-Year Junior Coach
My name is Eric and I will be a freshman at Balboa High School in the fall. I started playing with Ultimate Impact in the 8th grade with Coach JJ and Coach Nicole at Dr. Martin Luther King Middle School. After I played for a few months and volunteered to help as a coach at ER Taylor Elementary School, which is right next to MLK, they invited me to be part of the Developing Leaders Program. I'm looking forward to the Developing Leaders Program because I get to meet new people, become better at ultimate, and build upon my leadership skills.
